Makeup sponges are great tools for applying foundation.

In fact, they are one of the preferred tools for applying foundation and are loved by many, including me!

I love that airbrush foundation look after using a makeup sponge to apply my foundation. It’s the next best thing to using an airbrush makeup kit.

I have eyed the Aeroblend Airbrush Makeup Kit on Amazon for the longest, but the price has me hostage – I just can commit!

I will put it on my birthday wish list and hope for the best.

However, for people like me, makeup sponges are a great substitution for airbrush kits because they get the job done and most importantly they are affordable.

Makeup Sponges Are Reusable

You can use these bad boys over and over! That’s another huge advantage of using makeup sponges.

Makeup sponges have totally replaced my makeup wedges – I no longer purchase makeup wedges.

Latex-free foam makeup wedges are great for applying makeup, but over time the cost adds up.

Overall, I love a good makeup sponge – they blend foundation like nobody business, the only con is cleaning them can be a hassle without using the right products.

Using Clean Makeup Sponges

Since I am acne-prone, using clean makeup sponges is a must.

Hence, use clean makeup sponges for every foundation application.

I learned the hard way after breaking out from using a dirty makeup sponge.

My skin was like no girl!

Best Makeup Sponge Cleanser

One of the best makeup sponge cleansers for cleaning makeup sponges is the Blendercleanser Solid by Beautyblender.

It was primarily created as the cleansing solution for the beauty blender.

However, it can be used to clean other makeup sponges and brushes as well.

This makeup sponge cleanser is amazing – it cleans makeup sponges like a charm, but it is expensive.

Consequently, after running out of Blendercleanser Solid a few times, I decided to try a few DIY cleansers.

There is so much information available online for research.

As part of my research, I viewed several YouTube videos and read several articles.

This DIY solution works great! All you need is some vinegar, some dishwashing liquid, preferably Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap and water.

I am glad I found a cheap alternative.

However, during my trial and error, I damaged my beauty blender in the process.

One of my bad DIY makeup cleansers included bleach!

Do not use bleach to clean your makeup sponge.

My beauty blender was severely damaged after using bleach to clean it.

Use vinegar and dishwashing liquid soap instead.

Yes, I know. Honestly, I was desperate that day and I only had Apple Cider Vinegar in my panty, so I made do.

Thankfully, there wasn’t any funky scent after cleaning the makeup sponges. However, white vinegar and most dishwashing liquid soap will do.

My favorite mix is Great Value Distilled White Vinegar and Gain Ultra Dishwashing Liquid or Dawn Dishwashing Liquid.

  1. I found out that using Lush solid shampoo works even better than the Blendercleanser and it lasts for a very long time.
