You know the phone call is about to end and you will not get a call back after hearing one of these 9 excuses people use to get off the phone number 8 will crack you up!
9 Excuses People Use To Get Off The Phone
Here’s a list of the most common excuses people use to get off the phone!
1. My phone is about to die
If I had a dime for every time someone said their phone is about to die then I would probably have enough money to buy myself a few cases of beer to last me at least the rest of the year.
I kid you not it’s one of the most used excuses to get off the phone and it’s one of those excuses you too can use and totally get away with it and here’s why.
It’s not uncommon for someone to complain about the battery life of their phone being ineffective. Or directly complaining about having to recharge their phones more often than they want to. Therefore, this excuse is actually legit.
In fact, some of the most popular phones on in market are notorious for having bad battery life and it’s a known fact.
For instance, imore.com created an in-depth article to help iPhone users fix their iPhone bad battery life problems. (BTW if you need to fix your iPhone’s bad battery life problem definitely check them out. Their article is helpful.)
Now, if you’re an Android user, you can also use this excuse because top Android cellphones like the Samsung Galaxy S9 also have bad battery life problems. Gottabemobile.com has an in-depth article on how to fix it.
Overall, I could list many other cellphones brands with bad battery life but this blog post would be too long. However, to add extra sauce here, even my LG G6 cellphone has battery life problems.
Given these points, using this excuse to get off the phone is a no-brainer, because it’s such a common problem.
Thus, many people won’t even consider you’re probably just giving them the slip.
2. Let me call you right back
If you’re ever on the phone and the person you’re talking to tells you that they will call you back, just know that they are not calling you back, or at least not anytime soon.
It could be the case that something important has come up for them that they have to handle immediately. Maybe their phone could be on the verge of dying and they need to put it on the charger.
They can still talk while their phone is on the charger, but that can be a hassle sometimes so who wants to deal with that?
With all these scenarios in mind, you still have to consider the fact that they may need to call you back because they need a break from talking on the phone with you.
We all have been there before on both ends of the spectrum. It’s not that the person doesn’t enjoy talking to you, they just need a break from talking after being on the phone for several hours.
Then again, you and the individual’s conversation may only be less than a minute because deep down they really don’t like talking to you.
If that is the case then don’t sweat it because it is what it is.
3. Something came up
“Something came up we will talk later” Have you heard that excuse before? You probably have. I know I have heard it several times and I have also used it several times.
Now a few of these times when I did use it something really did come up but a few of the times not so much. BTW I am spilling my laundry over here don’t judge.
But the main question is can you be found out for using this excuse? In short, most likely no. Like 99.9% no.
Considering that person is nowhere in sight, then there isn’t a chance they will find out you really just no longer wanted to talk to them.
Now things could get really awkward if this person is indeed in the same facility and they run into you while you’re just sitting, chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air).
However, at this point, it is what it is. Here’s what to do if this ever happens to you:
Firstly, stay calm. Secondly, don’t give them any other excuses – the first one is enough. Instead, continue whatever you were doing.
However, if you realize they are about to continue the same conversation you can then easily excuse yourself because your excuse “something came up” is still effective.
Now some folks are just nosey they want to know exactly what’s going on. They are not completely satisfied with “something came up” excuse.
Don’t worry. You’re grown you don’t have to explain yourself. Just tell them you will talk later.
4. I’m about to eat
People will pull out the snacks with the quickness just to tell you they have to get off the phone to eat with a guilt-free conscience.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care how good a conversation is, if I get hungry the conversation will be cut short.
I’m sure I’m not the only person who feels this way when they’re hungry on the phone because you’re just not you when you’re hungry.
Some people will go as far as to eat while they’re on the phone then they will say “I know you don’t want to hear me smacking in your ear so I’ll call you back”.
The truth of the matter is they are not even hungry. This is just a tactic to get off the phone with you.
5. I’m tired
Another excuse people use to get off the phone is I’m tired. They usually add I have to be up early tomorrow. However, the craziest thing is if you’re on Instagram you see these same people liking posts on Instagram and even commenting.
So are they really tired?
However, with all things considered they could actually be tired but, on the other hand, they probably just didn’t want to talk to you.
So can you use this excuse too? Well, heck yes, but under one condition you have to actually be inactive. For instance, no liking pictures on Instagram.
If you do, then don’t be surprised if this person decides to call you back to continue the conversation.
Some people will call you as soon as they see you like or comment on a Facebook post so take that into consideration.
Therefore, if you use this excuse be prepared to stay off social media or your actions will indicate you just didn’t want to talk.
6. Somebody else is calling me
People will tell you somebody is calling them like whoever is calling them have anything important to talk about, and maybe they do which is why by default you would give that person the benefit of the doubt.
Unfortunately, you giving them the benefit of the doubt is in their favor and they will comfortably tell you somebody is calling them.
The truth of the matter is the only phone call they received today is from you and they debated whether they were going to pick up the phone or just let the phone ring without declining the call.
However, they can’t make it too obvious that they don’t want to talk to you.
Sometimes some will go as far as telling you, the person on the other line is their mama or grandma because no one is questioning mama and grandma – I mean no one.
7. I’m losing service
Having phone reception issues or signal issues is real. Some telecommunication companies boast nationwide coverage.
However, it isn’t uncommon to experience bad coverage issues even in the same building.
Therefore, if someone is using this excuse it is very hard to realize they really just want to prematurely end the call.
Now you may be wondering why they haven’t invested in a cellphone signal booster but understand, while it may benefit them they probably don’t need one because they are just lying to get off the phone.
However, with all things considered, this is precisely why this excuse is one of the best excuses you can use to get off the phone easily.
Furthermore, if they do decide to call you shortly after you can simply call them later because your original excuse still stands “I’m losing service”.
I am playing dirty in this post but the reality is sometimes you just don’t feel like talking and you prefer not to hurt anyone’s feelings by telling them, hey I really don’t feel like talking to you right now.
Now, some people will sincerely understand if you told them exactly that. But what if this was a phone call with your manager or business partner?
8. For whatever reason, my phone is acting funny
People love getting new phones, but the people who can’t get a new phone, they’re not sad because they see the positive side of things.
One of the pros of having an old phone is they have a legit reason why they can’t talk to you.
Even if they don’t have any issues with their phone you wouldn’t know that, especially knowing that they do not have the latest phone that is on the market.
You can be on the phone talking to them and mid-conversation they will hang up on you and then call you back to say “My phone tripping, it just randomly hung up on you”.
Naw homie that wasn’t random unless your thumb randomly pressed the end button by mistake. Also, there is the tactic of silence.
For instance, after a while, you will be the only one talking. In fact, eventually, you stop talking only to hear a response from them but instead, you hear nothing but the thoughts that are going through your head.
You keep saying hello until you hang up and call them back. They will pick up and pretend like they couldn’t hear you. They will say “I couldn’t even hear you.
My phone must be acting up”. Nope, you just have the phone on mute but that’s none of my business.

Uh, can you hear me? Can you hear me now? The call is breaking up … I can’t even hear you properly … ugh, this phone again …
I am going to stop. No one more time … ugh, this phone again! I will have to call you back.
Now I am not saying everyone who says this is simply trying to get off the phone, but if it sounds unnatural they probably are – just be observant.
Now should you use this excuse? Overall, it really depends on how good you can fake it until you make it.
For some, this is natural – very easy. In fact, they’ve used this excuse so many times now they have become professionals. No joke they are extremely good.
They will fake it so well that you will begin to feel sorry for them to the point where you even consider helping them find a better cellphone and a better cellphone plan.
